If you didn't already know the sport of track and field is kind of a big deal in the Metcalf household. Pretty much 365 days a year the topic of who is running fast, how today's team practice was, whose the hottest recruits in the nation, or what Oiselle team members are racing this weekend...is pretty much the normal around here. As Greg's team prepares for NCAA's next week and USA's in the near distance...it is pretty much GO time! Time to watch and celebrate fast track and field!
So if you live in Seattle and you are itching to watch some fast times thrown down, travel south to Oregon for these next three meets:
The PRE Classic:
If you haven't made the trip to Eugene to watch this spectacular meet, put it on your bucket list! The fields are stacked with the best of the best and if you haven't seen a meet in Hayward then it is time. Being a former 800 meter runner myself, my favorite on the list is the 800 field loaded with great athletes one of which my fav: Alysia Montano. Last year she set the meet record in 1:57:37. This year the field will include Mary Cain, Brenda Martinez, Mariya Savinova of Russia, and more! For the complete 800m field. For more information about the live webcast check out RunnerSpace.
NCAA Championship:
On June 5th-8th the best college athletes in the nation will all be in Eugene! I can't wait to load up the car and head to Track Town USA. Last year's championship was in Des Moines, Iowa and I wasn't able to travel to it. One of the races that would have been amazing to see in person was Katie Flood of the University of Washington winning the 1500m in her hometown and on her home field: Drake Stadium. Watching the race online, hearing Greg's recap, and pouring over any photos I could find online was awesome, but seeing a standing ovation for this wonderful young lady would have been priceless.
Portland Track Festival:
After NCAA's finishes on Saturday afternoon, I would recommend grabbing a cup of joe up at the Dutch Bros. coffee stand on Franklin Avenue, and then head north to Portland to watch another great meet. Why Portland? Because if someone is going to try and qualify for USA's this is one meet that a lot of athletes head to...one of our own Collier Lawrence and her sister UW senior Mel Lawrence will be competing in the steeple. A sister steeple duo - awesome! The 1500m field at PTF last year going into Olympic Trials was stacked.
So here we go! Championship time - get your fan shirts on and get pumped to watch some exciting track and field!
Go Fast. Take Chances.
